Before we have posted that, the most popular PC game is not World of Warcraft. Did you disappoint? Hope not. WoW is still growing. The last official number of subscribers was 10.9 million, and with games sales charts still showing WoW as a regular in the top ten, if not actually number one, it's practically a given that WoW will exceed 11 million after the release of Lich King.
If you're not on the beta, the only thing left to do for most players is level an alt, or grind those last few parts of a set - let's face it, there's not much point in doing much else, because in a few weeks (months?) we'll all be in Northrend getting greens that are better than level 70 blues, or leveling a Death Knight. So it wouldn't be that surprising if WoW was losing subscribers rather than gaining them right now - but that's not the case.
In an interview with videogaming247 at the recent GC, Tom Chilton confirmed that the number of subscribers is still on the rise:
It's actually still growing. It's certainly not in a reverse trend, or anything like that. I do expect that with the launch of Lich King [it will] probably affect the subscription numbers.
My friend said: "The new Island was great - don't get me wrong. I always find stuff to do in WoW, no matter if there's new content or not. However, a lot of raiding guilds have Sunwell on farm by now, and non-raiders are probably bored of grinding dailies and PvPing. I'm not exaggerating when I say that over half the people I know who play WoW have cut right back at the moment, through sheer lack of new things to do. I'm expecting most of them to return when the expansion hits though."
